In 1999, the Salt Lake Valley Health Department convened the major
Salt Lake County health care providers to discuss what could be
done to address the needs of the growing number of uninsured in
our community. The providers decided to form the Salt Lake Valley
Health Care Coverage Coalition. Over the next two years, the Coalition
identified several strategies that could be implemented to improve
the system of care for the uninsured in the County. In 2001, the
Coalition was awarded a Community Access Program grant from the
federal Health Resources and Services Administration, and the Health
Access Project was formed. Community Health Centers, Inc. administers
the grant on behalf of the Coalition.
